RasGas’ production capacity for liquefied natural gas (LNG) will rise later this year, when all seven of its trains are operational with Train 7 due to come. The approximate capacity will be 37 million tonnes per annum (Mta).
RasGas Managing Director and CEO, Hamad Rashid Al Mohannadi said that natural gas is expected to be the world's fastest-growing conventional source of energy over the next two decades. Making a presentation at the MEED Qatar Projects 2010 conference, Jeff Jones, RasGas Operations Expansion Manager outlined the company's most recent achievement, LNG Train 6. Titled 'From Vision to Reality: Bringing a Mega-train Online', the presentation provided an overview of this groundbreaking project.
Jones described how RasGas overcame significant challenges to integrate the entire LNG value chain - from production at the well-head to delivery to customers around the world. He discussed how the company is now applying the knowledge gained from these experiences to successfully start up its seventh LNG train.
Train 6 produced its first LNG in July 2009 and the first Q-Flex tanker cargo was loaded the following month, marking the successful completion of the immense project.
RasGas Train 6 is capable of liquefying 7.8 Mta of LNG. Since RasGas produced its first LNG in 1999, the company has increased the liquefaction capacity of its trains by approximately 65 per cent. Together with the expansion of the RasGas LNG shipping fleet, Train 6 allows unprecedented economies of scale across the entire LNG value chain; from upstream production to liquefaction and transportation all the way to the receiving terminal.
