Project Current Status

Saipem of Italy has awarded a sub-contract to SENDAN of Saudi Arabia for the $3bn-plus Berri increment project. The sub-contract is for the civil construction work packages. The contract period is 24 months. (January 2023)

Project History
  • SNC Lavalin has been awarded the engineering and project management services for the Berri Increment Program. The scope of work includes FEED for a new 250 MBCD (thousand barrels of oil per calendar day) gas oil separation plant at the existing Abu Ali Gas Plant, as well as additional facilities at the Khursaniyah Gas Plant that will process 40 MBD (thousand barrels per day) of hydrocarbon condensate, all associated with the Berri Crude Increment. (April 2017)

  • Tender for the Berri oilfield expansion is expected by the third or fourth quarter of this year. The construction packages are expected to be awarded in 2019 with completion scheduled in 2022. (February 2018)
  • Commercial EPC bids have been submitted for the $400 million EPC contract for the replacement of the offshore pipelines for the Berri oilfield. All LTA-approved contractors are thought to have submitted a price for the contract. The scope of work includes replacing 11 offshore pipelines at the Berri oilfield. (July 2018)
  • Aramco will soon issue major tender for the Berri offshore oilfield development. The scope of the contract covers 10 oil production deck modules (PDM) each weighing around 1,500 tonnes, a PDM for water injection, a tie-in platform and around 100 km of subsea pipelines. Several packages within the project, including gas plant expansion, gas-oil separation units and offshore jackets installation, will be issued. (August 2018)
  • Contract for the construction of two drilling islands under the Berri Increment Program (BIP) has been awarded to China Harbour Engineering Arabia. The drilling islands will be constructed near shore at the north and south sides of the King Fahad Industrial Port (KFIP) causeway in Jubail, to support the Berri field production capacity islands. The two drill sites referred to as Site A and Site B will have an approximate overall area of 616,553 square meters and 263,855 square meters respectively. (September 2018)
  • Aramco has issued EoI for the EPC contract for expanding the existing gas oil separation plant’s (GOSP) processing capacity as part of its Berri field development megaproject. Tender for the contract is expected to be issued later in Q4, 2018. (October 2018)
  • Saudi Aramco is set to receive bids by 21 March, 2019 for the EPC contract for expanding the existing gas oil separation plant’s (GOSP) processing capacity as part of its Berri field development megaproject. SNC-Lavalin of Canada has completed the FEED works and is also the PMC for the project. (March 2019)
  • Bids have been submitted for the EPC contract for expanding the existing GOSP processing capacity as part of its Berri field development megaproject. The bidders are: Hyundai Engineering & Construction of South Korea, and Saipem of Italy. (April 2019)
  • The EPC contract, estimated to be worth $200 million, to expand the water injection facilities at its Berri oil and gas field has been awarded to Contracting & Trading (CAT) Group of Lebanon. The contract scope includes construction of a water injection plant, and installation of water injection pumps and instrument control systems. (May 2019)
  • EPCI contract worth between $350 million and $380million for the installation of downstream pipelines at Aramco's Berri offshore oil and gas field has been awarded to Saipem of Italy. (June 2019)
  • The EPC contract for expanding the existing GOSP processing capacity as part of its Berri field development megaproject has been awarded to Saipem of Italy. The contract is estimated to be worth $2 billion. (June 2019)
  • Aramco has issued a tender for modification works at its offshore Berri field to its LTA pool of contractors, under the Contracts Release and Purchase Order (CRPO) job number 64. Last date to submit bids is 16 August, 2020. The estimated value of the EPCI job could be upwards of $250mn. The contract scope calls for EPCI work on the replacement of subsea pipelines, subsea valve skids installation and demolition works at the Berri field. The contractor will need to replace 17 water injection pipeline segments, at thicknesses of 8 inches, 12 inches and 16 inches. (August 2020)
  • Saipem of Italy has awarded a subcontract worth RMB 1.557 billion (USD 239.3 million) to China National Chemical Corporation No. 3 (SINOCTCC) for the $3bn-plus Berri increment project. Saipem is the main contractor on the project. Under the subcontract, SINOCTCC will construct the western part of the AAP crude oil processing unit of the project. The scope of work includes civil engineering, steel structure, pipelines, equipment, anti-corrosion, heat preservation, electrical instruments, etc. The contract period is 30 months. (March 2021)

Project Scope

The project scope involves expansion of oil and gas production from the Berri offshore oilfield, which would add over time 250,000 barrels per day of crude oil, possibly by building drilling islands offshore in the Gulf, while also processing higher-pressure associated gas for sweetening in Khursaniyah. The field currently produces between 250,000 and 300,000 bpd.

Low-pressure gas would be sent to the Berri gas plant in Jubail, which will be expanded under a programme to recover more natural gas liquids (NGL) and sulphur.

Berri is a giant oil field which originally had reserves in excess of 15 billion barrels. It has 11 oil-bearing reservoirs, the most significant of which are the Arab A, B, C and D reservoirs which produce Arabian light crude and the Hanifa, Hadriya and Upper Fadhili reservoirs, which produce Arabian extra light.
