India: Centre Okays NPP for Sagarmala Project

To rope in maritime states in the Sagarmala port development project, the Centre on 5 October 2015 lined up Rs 70,000 crore for upgrade of major ports. 

 

According to the minister for shipping and road transport and highways believes that apart from faster movement of freight, the integrated port development programme would result in huge saving in logistics cost.

 

An initial fund of Rs 692 crore was earmarked for the Sagarmala port development project in the 2015-16 budget.

 

The shipping minister approved the approach and methodology of the preparation of the national perspective plan (NPP) and the identification of "early bird" projects till the finalisation of NPP.
