The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will install a 12.5 MW solar energy plant at the Bhandup water treatment complex.
The water treatment plant treats raw water from the four dams before supplying it to over 20 lakh households across the city.
The solar power plant will produce 1.75 lakh units of power, thus saving 33 percent of energy demand yearly. The project will save Rs 14 crore on power expenditure.
Construction work on the first phase of the project, which involves setting up a 2.5 MW plant, has commenced on the 26,000 sq mtr area, on a pilot basis. The project is expected to be completed by January 2018. The second phase will involve installing a 10 MW solar plant.
A provision of Rs 8.22 crore has also been made towards the project in the budget by BMC.
