Bahrain's Dilmunia Launches Second 66kV Primary Power Substation

Ithmaar Development Company (IDC) has announced the energization of the second Dilmunia 66kV primary substation (Janoob Dilmunia), marking a significant milestone in the development of the Bahrain project.

This means that electricity availability is secured for all current developments on Dilmunia, and all others under planning or design and expected in the next three years.

Dilmunia’s first 66kV primary substation was brought on-stream in August 2016.

The second substation too has a capacity of 48 MVA taking the total available power in Dilmunia to 96 MVA.

The new substation can cater for phase 2 and phase 3 of the Dilmunia development; one more station will be established on the island to serve the final phase of the project.

IDC awarded SNC Lavalin the design and supervision consultancy of the plant equipment and cabling and Ansari Engineering Services for the design and supervision consultancy of the substation civil building. Both consultants were appointed in November 2016.

The project cost of the second substation was approximately BD5 million.

The completion of these two substations is in line with the progress of sales in Dilmunia and the increase in the power demand with the ongoing plot developments in various phases.

Dilmunia is inhabited through various completed projects (the Seavilla, Essence of Dilmunia, the Treasure Tower and numerous private villas developments).

There are a number of developments that are currently either under construction or in the building permit stage, chief among them the Mall of Dilmunia which is expected to be completed by end of 2019 and the Dilmunia Grand Canal in early 2020.

IDC chief executive Mohammed Khalil Alsayed said with properties in Dilmunia now being allowed for purchase by foreign nationals and the increasing number of inhabitants in the island, its attractiveness as a favoured destination has gained further traction.

The next key announcement in the development was the award of the contract for the grand canal works, which has already been tendered.
