Project Current Status

SR3.68 billion ($980 million) contract to build ISCC has been awarded to General Electric (GE). GE will be leading the development of the project including the supply of the gas turbines. They will subcontract the solar farm to other suppliers. GE will be supplying four advanced GE 7F.05 heavy duty gas turbines and a GE steam turbine, and featuring solar innovation technology. Project History
  • Bids have been invited to develop a 1,050MW integrated solar and combined cycle .ISCC. power plant at Maaden s Waad al-Shamal industrial development in Saudi Arabia. Contractors have time until October second week to submit bids. (August 2014)
  • EPC technical bids have been submitted for the contract to build a ISCC power plant. Commercial bids are expected in early 2015. (October 2014)
  • Eight groups had submitted bids for the main EPC contract. The Al-Fanar consortium submitted the lowest bid. (July 2015)
  • Fresh bids have been submitted by the two lowest bidders in the original bidding, a consortium of the Al-Fanar Construction of KSA and Siemens of Germany, and a joint venture of Abener, part of Abengoa group of Spain, and GE of US. (September 2015)

Project Scope

The project scope involves the construction of a 1,390MW integrated solar and combined cycle (ISCC) power plant at Saudi Arabian Mining Company’s (Maaden) Waad al-Shamal industrial development in Saudi Arabia. 

 

The plant is an integration of a 50MW solar component into a combined-cycle gas turbine power plant and it will use concentrated solar power technology (CSP). 

 

The developer will decide whether to utilize parabolic trough, power tower or linear fresnel technology.

Project Structure:
The project is owned, operated and managed by Saudi Electricity Company (SEC). Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden) is the owner of Waad al-Shamal industrial development in Saudi Arabia.
