Project Current Status

Masdar has awarded a major contract to supply battery energy storage systems (BESS) to BYD Energy Storage for the RTC renewable energy project in Abu Dhabi. Under the contract, BYD Energy Storage will supply 11.275 GWh of its Haohan energy storage system for a single battery energy storage station with a capacity of 1,644 MW / 11,275 MWh. The scope of work includes the engineering, supply, and deployment of BYD’s advanced battery energy storage solution, incorporating high-capacity Blade Battery technology, intelligent energy management systems (EMS), and equipment designed to operate under the demanding climatic conditions of the Gulf region. Project History
  • Larsen & Toubro and Powerchina have been selected as Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors for the planned 5,200 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) and 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) BESS plants in Abu Dhabi. (February 2025)

  • Jinko Solar and JA Solar are preferred suppliers for PV modules utilizing the latest TopCon technology with optimized parameters for maximum efficiency and production for 30 years. CATL, as preferred supplier for the BESS, would supply its leading TENER technology for the total capacity of 19 GWh. (February 2025)
  • Masdar and Ewec has launched the combined 5.2 GW solar power and 19-gigawatt-hour battery storage project, capable of providing 1 gigawatt (GW) of continuous baseload renewable energy around the clock. (October 2025)
  • Masdar has signed an agreement with JinkoSolar of China for the supply 2 GW of photovoltaic (PV) modules for the Solar PV and BESS project in Abu Dhabi. The contract scope covers the supply of its Tiger Neo series modules based on N-type TOPCon technology. (May 2026)
  • Masdar has signed an agreement with Sungrow of China for the supply of energy storage system and PV inverter solutions for the project. The company will supply 7.5GWh of PowerTitan 3.0 ESS, alongside 2.6GW of PV inverter solutions, supporting the project's operational reliability and efficiency. The project will deploy more than 1,000 PowerTitan 3.0 liquid-cooled ESS integrated with advanced PV inverter technologies to support continuous power delivery and enhanced grid stability. Each system operates on an optimized cycle of 8-hour charging and 16-hour discharging to support a stable and flexible renewable energy supply. (June 2026)

Project Scope

The project scope involves the development of the world’s first large-scale ‘round the clock’ gigascale project, which will combine solar photovoltaic (PV) power and battery storage to deliver uninterrupted renewable energy.

 

The planned 5,200 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) and 19 gigawatt-hour (GWh) BESS plants will enable a 1,000 MW round-the-clock solar plant providing baseload capacity, a first in the world. 

 

The project, which will be built in Abu Dhabi, will constitute a north site and a south site, amounting to 2.6 GW and 9.5 GWh PV capacity each.

 

The plant will use AI-driven forecasting, intelligent dispatch, and predictive analytics, setting a new global standard for clean energy.

 

The initiative will cut approximately 5.70?million tons of CO2 annually.
