Project Current Status

A contract to engineer, procure and construct a 380 kV substation project to connect Tanajib cogeneration and desalination project to the Saudi electricity grid has been awarded to Linxon. The Linxon supply consists of an EPC contract for the 380 kV GIS substation with all necessary protection and control systems. Linxon will be executing this on a turnkey basis including associated construction activities, equipment installation and commissioning. (December 2021)

  • Aramco has invited the pre-qualified companies to submit bids by 29 July, 2019 for its planned Marjan cogeneration independent steam and power plant (ISPP), which will be co-developed with the Tanajib desalination project. (March 2019)
  • Bids submission deadline bids for the planned Marjan cogeneration ISPP has been extended to 9 September, 2019, from the previous submission date of 29 July, 2019. (July 2019)
  • The bids submission deadline has been extended to 30 September, 2019 for the planned Marjan cogeneration ISPP, which will be co-developed with the Tanajib desalination project. (September 2019)
  • 4 groups have submitted bids for the planned Marjan cogeneration ISPP – Acwa Power of Saudi Arabia / Gulf Investment Corporation (GIC) of Kuwait, Engie of France, Kepco of South Korea / Al-Jumaih of Saudi Arabia, Marubeni of Japan. (October 2019)

  • For the planned Marjan cogeneration ISPP, which will be co-developed with the Tanajib desalination project, the consortium of Marubeni of Japan and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) is set to be signed up for the development contract this month. (September 2021)
  • For the Tanajib power/steam and desalination plant, the consortium of Marubeni of Japan and Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) have signed the final contracts and reached financial close to develop the project. The consortium will also develop supporting infrastructure, including pipelines, to connect the desalination and cogeneration plants to end users. It will operate and maintain the plants for a period of 20 years. The project will have a power capacity of 940 MW and a steam capacity of 1,084 tonnes per hour of steam. The desalination plant will have a capacity of 5.25 million imperial gallons a day (MIGD). (November 2021)

Project Scope

The project scope involves the construction of a cogeneration independent steam and power plant (ISPP), which will be co-developed with the Tanajib desalination project.

 

The ISPP is planned to have a power capacity of 700-900 MW, with a steam capacity of 1,152-3,054 kilo pounds an hour, and a desalination component of 24,000 cubic metres / day (cm/d), expandable to 34,000 cm/d by 2030.

 

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) of Japan is the financial adviser, and Fichtner Consulting Engineers of Germany is the project consultant.
