Project Current Status

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) of India has awarded a contract for the manufacture, supply and supervision of a High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) cable system totaling 260km to Riyadh Cables Group. The contract is worth approximately AED 160 million ($43.6 million) and it will be delivered by Q1, 2025. (February 2024)

  • The bids submission deadline has been extended to 11 August, 2022 for the IPP advisory services for solar PV power plant at MBR Solar Park - Phase VI Project. (August 2022)
  • Dewa has received bids for the advisory services for Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant – MBR Solar Park Phase VI. The bidders are: Deloitte Professional Services (DIFC), EY Consulting LLC, KPMG Lower Gulf Limited, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). DIFC has submitted the lowest bid offer of AED 4.36 million ($1.1 million). (August 2022)

  • Dewa has extended the deadline to express interest to 1 November, 2022 for the 900 MW solar photovoltaic independent power project - Phase VI at MBR Solar Park. Dewa will select a suitable developer/developers or developer consortium/consortia to share ownership of project company/companies to be incorporated in accordance with Dubai and UAE laws to build and operate on an Independent Power Project (IPP) basis.   • Dewa has awarded a contract to a consortium led by Ernst & Young for the advisory services for the 900 MW Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant – MBR Solar Park Phase VI. Advisory services provided by the consortium include reviewing existing UAE legislation and regulatory frameworks, IPP developer tender document preparation, financial model development, developer tender submission management and evaluation, development of supplemental agreements, commercial negotiation, and concluding a power purchase agreement and financial closure with the developer. The scope also includes preparing a project marketing plan & activities, local and international roadshows and workshops. The project will become operational in stages between 2025 and 2027.   • Dewa has convened local and international developers for a briefing on the 1,800 MW solar PV Phase 6 of the Solar Park, which was first slated to have a capacity of 900 MW. Phase 6 will become operational in stages between 2024 and 2026. (March 2023)
  • Dewa has received bids for the 1800 MW solar photovoltaic independent power project – Phase VI at MBR Solar Park. Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) has emerged as the lowest bidder for the development of the IPP project by submitting a bid price of $1.62154 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh). Apart from Masdar, another bid has been submitted by Saudi utility projects developer Acwa Power. (June 2023)
  • Masdar of Abu Dhabi is the preferred bidder for the construction and operation of the 1,800 MW, phase VI of the MBR Solar Park project. The project documents, Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), and financial close agreements will be signed in due course. The IPP project will become operational in stages starting from Q4 of 2024.   • The Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) has awarded a mega EPC contract to the renewable arm of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) of India for 1,800 MW Phase 6 of MBR Solar Park. In addition to the PV plant, the contract scope includes related evacuation and interconnection arrangements including two Gas Insulated Substations (GI), high voltage underground cabling and medium voltage distribution networks.   • Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) has announced that it has reached the financial closing of the sixth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. On completion, the solar park’s capacity will exceed 5,000 MW by 2030, with investments totaling approximately AED 50 billion ($13.2 billion). This is a new milestone in promoting the use of clean and renewable energy in the UAE. Dewa is implementing the sixth phase of the solar park in co-operation with Masdar based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, using the latest solar photovoltaic bifacial technologies with single-axis tracking. For the sixth phase, Dewa established Shuaa Energy 4 in partnership with Masdar. Dewa owns 60% of the company, whereas Masdar owns the remaining 40%. The lending group to the project includes Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Commercial Bank of Dubai, First Abu Dhabi Bank, HSBC, Standard Chartered, Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank and Warba Bank. (February 2024)

Project Scope

The project scope involves the construction of a solar photovoltaic power plant at Mohammed Bin Rashid (MBR) Solar Park - Phase VI Project, which will have a capacity of 1800 MW.

 

As with the second to fifth phases, the sixth phase will be developed under an independent power producer (IPP) model.

 

The power generated by the project will be purchased by Dewa under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

 

The MBR Solar Park is currently the largest solar project in the UAE and Middle East. It will have a capacity of 5,000 MW by 2030 with investments of Dh 50 billion ($13.6 billion).
