Project Current Status

Kuwait’s Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy Ministry (MEW) has received bids for a project to provide services to Sabiya thermal power plant in Al-Jahra west of the capital Kuwait City. Heavy Engineering Industries and Shipbuilding Company (HEISCO) of Kuwait has submitted the lowest bid with value of KD 61.7 million ($204 million). The contract scope involves providing “highly efficient and continuous engineering services” for combined cycle gas turbine and auxiliaries at the power plant. (September 2023)

Project Scope

The project scope involves the new extension of Sabiya Power and Distillation Plant [Sabiya Extension 4 CCGT], located in Al Jahra governorate.

 

The scope of work involves supply, installation of Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) units to increase the power generation capacity by 900 megawatts (MW) with associated infrastructure including two new gas oil tanks having a net usable capacity of 15,000 cubic metres each.

 

The 935 MW Sabiya extension 3 CCGT was completed by Alghanim International in 2020 at a cost of $439 million. The powertrain was supplied by Germany’s Siemens.

 

Sabiya Power Plant had a total installed capacity of 7046.7 MW.
