The Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) Energy Hydrocarbon (LTEH) has awarded a significant Detailed Engineering Design contract to Technip Energies of France for the North Field Production Sustainability Offshore Compression Project (NFPS COMP 4). Under this contract, Technip Energies, having completed the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) phase, will provide Detailed Engineering Design for two offshore compression complexes. Each will comprise large offshore platforms, flare platforms, interconnected bridges, and other associated structures. (May 2025)

Project History
  • Saipem of Italy has been awarded a $20mn contract to perform the front-end engineering and design (feed) work on main package of drilling and installation of production platforms. (January 2019)
  • QP has received bids for the $2bn main package of the North Field Production Sustainability (NFPS) project. The bidders are: CTCI Corporation of Taiwan, Linde of UK, Maire Tecnimont of Italy, McDermott of US, Saipem of Italy, Samsung Engineering of South Korea, TechnipFMC of France, Técnicas Reunidas of Spain, ThyssenKrupp of Germany. The EPCI scope of work on the package covers performing drilling and installation of production platforms. The NFPS project aims to sustain long-term gas production from the North Field. (August 2020)
  • QP has awarded a contract to Saipem of Italy for the main package of the estimated $3bn North Field Production Sustainability (NFPS) project. Under main package, Saipem will be responsible for the EPCI of various offshore facilities for the extraction and transportation of natural gas. These facilities include platforms, supporting and connecting structures, subsea cables, and anti-corrosion internally cladded pipelines. The contract also includes the decommissioning of a pipeline and other significant modifications to existing offshore facilities. Saipem plans to use the DE HE vessel to undertake pipe-laying and lifting operations in water depths of approximately 65m. (March 2021)
  • Qatargas has completed fabrication of wellhead platform jacket (WHP12N) for the NFPS Project. The jacket will serve as the steel frame to support a topside structure as part of a fixed offshore production platform. The new jacket is one of the several new offshore structures that will be installed to ensure that production from the existing LNG trains is sustained at 77 MTPA. The new jacket is the first support drilling structure ever to be manufactured in Qatar for Qatargas. Qatargas executed the initial jacket fabrication project on behalf of Qatargas 2 shareholders, which include Qatar Petroleum, ExxonMobil and TotalEnergies. The EPCI contract for the WHP12N Jacket was awarded to Saipem last year. (August 2021)
  • Qatargas has received bids for the development of gas compression facilities as a part of the NFPS project in Qatar. Hyundai Heavy Industries is among the bidders who have submitted bids. The companies competing for the contract include a consortium of Technip Energies of France / Samsung Heavy Industries, and Daewoo Engineering & Construction. The contract scope includes installation of two gas compression complexes, installation of jackets and topsides, and construction of associated facilities. (April 2022)
  • Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea and McDermott of US are among the bidders who have submitted bids for the development of gas compression facilities for NFPS. Currently, bids are under evaluation. The contract scope includes installation of two gas compression complexes, installation of jackets and topsides, and construction of associated facilities. (May 2022)

  • QatarEnergy has awarded an offshore EPC contract valued at approximately $4 billion to Saipem of Italy for the Combined Compression Complexes COMP3A & COMP3B of the North Field Production Sustainability Offshore Compression Project. The contract scope encompasses the engineering, procurement, fabrication and installation of six platforms as well as approximately 100 km of corrosion resistance alloy rigid subsea pipelines of 28” and 24” diameter, 100 km of subsea composite cables, 150 km of fiber optic cables and several other subsea facilities. In October 2022, Saipem was awarded the EPC package for the North Field Production Sustainability Offshore Compression Complexes Project – [COMP 2]. It is currently being executed. (October 2024)
  • QatarEnergy has awarded an offshore EPC contract worth more than Rs. 150 billion ($1.7 billion) to L&T Energy Hydrocarbon (LTEH) of India for the North Field Production Sustainability Offshore Compression Project (NFPS COMP 4). The contract scope encompasses the engineering, procurement, fabrication and installation and commissioning of two offshore compression complexes (4A and 4B package), each comprising large offshore platforms with compression and power generation facilities, living quarters, flare platforms, interconnected bridges, and other associated structures to be located 80 km off the northeast coast of Qatar. (April 2025)

Project Scope

Qatar Petroleum has undertaken the North Field Production Sustainability (NFPS) project to sustain long-term gas production from the North Field, the mammoth gas resource in the Gulf’s waters that it shares with Iran.

The NFPS megaproject has been divided into two packages.

The main package (Package 1) scope of work covers performing drilling and installation of production platforms.

The operator is pressing ahead with the NFPS project in parallel with its $20bn-plus North Field Expansion (NFE) megaproject, which aims to raise liquefied natural gas (LNG) production from the asset from 77.5 million tonnes per year (tpy) at present to 126 million tpy, in two phases, by 2028.

Project Structure:
The project is being managed and operated by Qatargas, who has been entrusted to execute this mega-project on behalf of QatarEnergy, formerly Qatar Petroleum (QP).
