GCCIA Signs Agreement for Electrical Interconnection Project with Iraq

The Qatar Development Fund and the Gulf Countries Electricity Interconnection Authority have signed an agreement to develop an interconnection system that will allow the electricity grid between the Gulf countries to be connected to that of southern Iraq.

According to reports, the works should start in the current month and finish in 2024. The agreement aims to help cover part of the electricity demand and improve the stability of the electricity grid in the region.

Specifically, the agreement provides for the construction of a new transformation substation with a capacity of approximately 400 kilovolts in the Wafra area, in Kuwait, and the connection of the Gulf electricity interconnection system to the Iraqi electricity grid through the Al Faw transformer station in southern Iraq.

The agreement appears to be of particular importance for Iraq, a country which, despite having huge oil resources, faces frequent power outages and relies on Iran for gas imports to meet energy needs.
