The West Bengal government planned to develop the pumped storage power plant on a public-private partnership model.
India’s JSW Group is reportedly planning to build a 900 MW pumped storage hydel power project in West Bengal.
The announcement was made by JSW Group chairman Sajjan Jindal at the Bengal Global Business Summit, which was organized by the state government.
Jindal said, “We are keenly pursuing a 900MW hydro-pumped storage project. This will bring clean energy to the state and we hope to receive this prestigious project through a nomination from the state government.”
The state government of West Bengal is said to have planned for a third pumped storage power plant at the Bandhunala project in Purulia.
It decided to develop the project on a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
In 2019, Jindal is said to have expressed an interest to develop a pumped storage energy project in the state.
Jindal added: “We are exploring the investment of a world-class roll shop in Kolkata that will cater to the steel industry.”
Last October, JSW Energy, a division of JSW Group, awarded a wind turbine contract to Senvion India for its 591MW project.
The project was part of JSW Energy’s 2.5GW renewable pipeline.
According to the contract, Senvion agreed to deliver its 2.7MW wind turbines, which can generate enough clean energy to power more than 450,000 homes in India.
In October 2020, JSW Energy reportedly planned an investment of $1.2bn (Rs88.6bn) in two wind power plants in Karnataka.
