Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has announced that work is moving at a steady pace on Hatta Water Reservoir which is on track for completion in Q4.
The project scope includes the construction of two reservoirs with a storage capacity of 30 million gallons (MIG) of desalinated water, the construction of supporting buildings, and the extension of entrance and exit pipes.
The structural foundation works for all facilities and reservoirs are 100% complete, while the above-ground works are 92% complete, and nearly 99% of the pipes have been laid, said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the MD and CEO of Dewa, after inspecting the work progress at the Hatta reservoir.
This project is being built at a total cost of AED 86 million ($23.4 million), he stated.
According to him, the water reservoirs that Dewa is building across the emirate supports the Dubai Integrated Water Resource Management Strategy 2030, and the UAE Water Security Strategy 2036.
They also enhance the efficiency and reliability of the water network as well as improve the water flow to fulfil the increasing demand for water in all parts of Dubai and increase the volume of the water storage capacity of Dubai to reach 1,152 MIG compared to the current 942 MIG. This helps fulfil current and future needs and promotes comprehensive sustainable development," he added.
Al Tayer revealed that currently Dewa is implementing a project to store 6 billion gallons of water in aquifers that can be retrieved when needed.
"This will provide the Emirate with a strategic reserve of over 50 million gallons of desalinated water per day in emergencies for 90 days, while ensuring the quality of the stored water remains unaffected by external factors," he added.
