Tata Power has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Maharashtra for developing two large pumped hydro storage projects (PSPs) with a combined capacity of 2,800 MW in the state.
These two projects, estimated to cost around Rs 13,000 crore, will come up at Shirawta in Pune (1,800 MW) and Bhivpuri, Raigad (1,000 MW) districts. By setting up these combined pumped hydro capacities, the proposed projects will significantly contribute to cleaner capacity addition by serving peak demand.
To maximise the potential for PSPs in Western Ghats, Tata Power has been operating three hydropower projects such as the hydro generating station in Khopoli, Bhivpuri, and Bhira, including 150 MW pumped storage hydro projects.
Moreover, these projects will sustain the renewable solar and wind projects to ensure reliability, and this initiative will significantly enhance energy security by providing a 24/7 consistent power supply.
