SECL Mines Being Explored for Coal Gasification Project

The prospect of making natural gas, methanol, ammonia and other essential products from coal is being explored in the mines of South Eastern Coalfields (SECL).

Specifically, the possibility of a coal gasification project is being explored in the Mahamaya opencast mine of the Bhatgaon operational area under SECL. The mine is located in the Surajpur district of Chhattisgarh. If implemented, it would be the first project of its kind in the state.

Coal gasification is seen as the most environmentally-friendly way to convert coal components into electricity, hydrogen, and valuable chemicals.

Further, the adoption of gasification technology in India will help in reducing the country's reliance on imported natural gas, methanol, and others.
