Sanjay Varma has been appointed as the Managing Director (Additional Charge) of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), effective from June 1, 2023. This appointment was made by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, as per their official order. MRPL is a prestigious CPSE mini ratna organization and a wholly owned subsidiary of ONGC.
Sanjay Varma brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise in the Oil & Gas industry. With over three and a half decades of service, he has held key positions in Operations Management, Project Management, Materials Management, and Health, Safety, and Environment Management.
Having served on the board of MRPL as Director Refinery since June 2020, Varma has been actively involved in the company's strategic direction and decision-making process. He has also gained extensive exposure through his involvement on the boards of MSTPL, ONGC Mangalore Petrochemicals Ltd, and Shell-MRPL Aviation.
A graduate in Mechanical Engineering, Sanjay Varma joined MRPL in December 1993 and has played a pivotal role in the execution and operation of all three major phases of the Refinery and its Aromatic Complex. Throughout his career, Varma has built a reputation for his exceptional track record across various functions, contributing significantly to the revival of MRPL's fortunes.
Under his leadership, MRPL achieved its best-ever physical performance and financial position, positioning it as India's largest operated single-site Oil PSU for the fiscal year 2022-23. With his extensive experience and proven capabilities, Varma is expected to lead MRPL towards a major expansion, meeting energy transformation targets, and venturing into ambitious marketing initiatives.
