New Projects to Increase Iraq’s Gas Production to 2 bcf/d by 2029

New projects under way in South Iraq will lift the Arab country’s gas output to nearly two billion cubic feet per day by 2029, an oil ministry spokesman has said.

Salim al-Rikabi said that the new projects include the Zubair-Mushrif gas project, low-pressure gas gathering projects, the Umm Qasr rehabilitation project, and the fully refrigerated gas project.

He noted that the previous plan aimed to completely stop the flaring of associated gas in the Basra gas fields by 2028, but that current circumstances may lead to the postponement of this date, suggesting that "complete cessation will likely occur during 2029."

“The targeted production capacity for the Basra Gas Company is 2 billion standard cubic feet per day, achieved through the utilization of associated gas from three major oil fields: Rumaila, West Qurna 1, and Zubair,” Rikabi said.

"The volume of gas being processed will reach a maximum of 1,400 million standard cubic feet per day by the end of 2027 or 2028," he added, noting at the same time that "the company's current operational gas processing capacity is 1,400 million standard cubic feet per day, in addition to 330 million standard cubic feet per day of surplus gas."

He said the ministry is implementing additional strategic projects that will contribute to increasing the volume of gas being processed in Iraq. These include the Artawi field, with a production capacity of 600 million cubic feet per day, which is being implemented in two phases, as well as the Bin Omar project, with a production capacity of 300 million standard cubic feet per day, which is also being implemented in two phases.
