ACWA Starts Commercial Operations in Two Saudi Power Plants

Saudi Arabia’s Acwa said it has commenced initial operations at two combined cycle gas-turbine (CCGT) power plants in Saudi Arabia.

The 1,934-megawatt (MW) Taiba 1 power plant in Madinah will initially generate 1,272 MW, while 1,896 MW Qassim 1 will start at 1,283 MW, the company said in separate statements to the Saudi stock exchange.

Acwa owns a 40 percent stake in each of Sidra One Electricity and Qudra One Electricity, which are the special-purpose vehicles for the projects.

The combined production capacity stands at 3,800 MW. The consortium, which includes Saudi Energy and Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co., has signed 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the state-run Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) - Principal Buyer.

The company expects the projects to be fully operational in the second quarter of 2027.
