India Adds 8.2 GWh Battery Energy Storage Capacity in H1-2026

India added 8.2 GWh of battery energy storage capacity in H1-2026, marking a monumental 84-fold increase compared to the 98.4 MWh installed during the same period in 2025. This surge reflects the government’s aggressive push to integrate intermittent solar and wind power into the national grid through robust energy storage solutions.

The sector’s growth is supported by a flurry of new project activity. GAIL (India) has floated a tender for a project management consultant to oversee a 100 MW solar project integrated with a 22 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Maharashtra. Simultaneously, the Bihar State Power Generation Company (BSPGCL) is inviting bids for a 125 MW/500 MWh standalone BESS at Kajra, Lakhisarai, to be developed on a Build-Own-Operate-Transfer basis.
