Global environmental services company Veolia has signed three strategic memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Acwa, Ma’aden, and Khazeen, a subsidiary of the National Gas and Industrialization Company (GASCO), to advance water technologies, industrial waste management, resource recovery, and decarbonization initiatives across Saudi Arabia.
The agreements establish frameworks for cooperation on a range of environmental solutions supporting the Kingdom’s industrial and infrastructure development. The MoUs cover potential applications across water desalination, industrial water treatment, hazardous waste management, circular economy initiatives, and integrated facility management.
The agreements are aligned with the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030, particularly in relation to water security, resource preservation, development of the circular economy, decarbonization, and strengthening local capabilities in environmental services.
Under the MoU with Acwa, Veolia will collaborate on improving the design and performance of seawater desalination plants, focusing on energy efficiency, optimization of chemical use, water quality, and the deployment of advanced technical, digital, and operational practices.
The cooperation builds on the companies’ previous work at desalination plants across the region, with the aim of improving the performance of both ACWA Power’s existing and future projects.
Acwa currently has desalination capacity of approximately 9.7 million cubic metres per day, according to the announcement. The collaboration could potentially deliver emissions reductions of up to 500,000 tonnes of CO? annually, while also reducing operating costs and contributing to enhanced water security.
The partnership will explore opportunities to apply Veolia’s water technologies and operational expertise at a larger scale across Acwa’s desalination portfolio.
Veolia’s MoU with Ma’aden will focus on improving water-cycle management and industrial waste management across Saudi Arabia’s mining industry.
The collaboration will explore the deployment of advanced water treatment technologies to optimize industrial processes, including the treatment and reuse of industrial water.
In waste management, the two companies will examine opportunities to reduce waste generation at source, recover materials, and increase the recovery and valorization of waste streams, creating new circular economy opportunities within the mining sector.
The partnership is expected to support Ma’aden’s efforts to improve resource efficiency and environmental performance as Saudi Arabia continues to expand its mining and minerals sector as part of its economic diversification strategy.
The third MoU was signed with Khazeen, a GASCO subsidiary specializing in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) storage.
The agreement will explore the deployment of Veolia’s environmental technologies across Khazeen’s storage infrastructure throughout Saudi Arabia, with a particular focus on industrial water treatment and hazardous waste management.
The partnership will also examine the development of an integrated facility management offering covering water, energy, and waste management for Khazeen’s customers.
These solutions are intended to support Khazeen’s decarbonization objectives while improving the environmental performance and resource efficiency of its infrastructure and associated operations.
Veolia has operated in Saudi Arabia since 1975, providing solutions across water, waste, and energy. The company has supported major industrial infrastructure in the Kingdom, including wastewater treatment activities in Jubail Industrial City, one of the world’s largest industrial complexes.
The company said its expertise in industrial water reuse, hazardous waste treatment, resource recovery, and energy efficiency will support Saudi Arabia as it addresses growing industrial demand, water scarcity, and climate-related challenges.
Through the three new strategic agreements with ACWA Power, Ma’aden, and Khazeen, Veolia aims to expand the application of its environmental technologies across key sectors of the Saudi economy while contributing to the Kingdom’s objectives for sustainable industrial development and environmental security.
