India’s Energy Storage Requirement Expects to Surge 411 GWh by FY32

India’s energy storage requirement is expected to surge nearly eightfold to around 411 GWh by FY32, compared with operational storage capacity of approximately 54 GWh as of June 2026, according to a report by CareEdge Ratings. The massive expansion could create an infrastructure investment opportunity worth more than Rs. 4000 billion over the next six years as India strengthens its renewable energy ecosystem.

The report said energy storage is becoming critical for integrating growing solar and wind capacity into the electricity grid. Storage systems can absorb surplus solar power generated during daytime hours and release it during periods of higher evening demand. This can help smooth the net load curve, reduce renewable energy curtailment and lower pressure on conventional power plants required to rapidly adjust generation.

India’s power sector is increasingly shifting from a challenge of adding generation capacity to one of effectively integrating renewable energy into the grid. While non-fossil sources account for around 50% of installed power capacity, their contribution to electricity generation remains significantly lower because of the intermittent nature and lower plant load factors of renewable sources. Rising solar penetration is also intensifying the “duck curve”, increasing the operational challenges faced by the electricity system.
