Orascom Achieves Key Milestone in Saudi-Egypt HVDC Interconnection Project

Orascom Construction, in collaboration with Hitachi Energy, has announced significant progress on the region’s first large-scale intercontinental High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link connecting Egypt and Saudi Arabia. This landmark project marks a critical step forward in enhancing cross-border energy exchange and regional grid stability.

The commissioning of Pole I, enabling a 1,500 MW bidirectional power exchange, is currently underway. Orascom Construction has successfully completed the installation of all major project equipment and provided key supplies essential for system integration, marking a pivotal operational phase. The company’s scope encompasses all EPC works within Egypt to establish the connection between the two national power grids.

Upon full completion, the HVDC interconnection will enable a 3,000 MW bidirectional power transfer, reinforcing electricity security, supporting peak demand management, and ensuring long-term grid resilience across both nations.

With a proven portfolio of over 30 GW in renewable and conventional power projects, Orascom Construction continues to play a leading role in delivering strategic energy infrastructure that drives regional development and sustainable growth, statement mentioned.
