Siemens Energy Delivers First SF6 Free GIS Project in Saudi Arabia

Siemens Energy, announces that it has delivered the first SF?-free Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) project in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.

The GIS was delivered in collaboration with main EPC Contractor ELSEWEDY ELECTRIC Power System Projects, PSP under contract with Saudi Electricity Company (SEC).

Earlier during February 2025, ELSEWEDY ELECTRIC Power System Projects, PSP awarded the contract with SEC.

The Company stated that, “this pioneering deployment of Blue GIS – 8VN1 at the Jawharat Al Aros Substation in Jeddah is more than a technological achievement—it’s a powerful step toward realizing the ambitions of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030.

This project reflects our shared commitment to building a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. With zero global warming potential and advanced digital monitoring capabilities, Blue GIS represents the kind of innovation that will define the next chapter of infrastructure development in the Kingdom. The environmental impact is significant: avoiding 260 kg of SF? and preventing over 6,100 tons of CO? emissions—equivalent to removing more than 1,300 cars from the road for a year or the carbon capture of over 100,000 tree seedlings grown for a decade”.
