12,500 MW BESS Projects Under Tender in India - CEA

Around 12,500 MW capacity of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects are under tendering process and 3,300 MW in the pipeline, said Central Electricity Authority Chairperson Ghanshyam Prasad.

"We have roughly around 3300 MW capacity in the pipeline, culminating to 8500 megawatt hour (MWh)... expected in the next two years. Another thing which is in the tender stage, roughly around 12,500 megawatt...roughly 42,000 MWh capacity is under the tender stage," Prasad said.

He further said that the country's current BESS capacity "looks very meagre". It stands at around 205 MW, which is around 506 megawatt hour only.

This year, the government is targeting around 3,000 megawatt of hydro pumped storage project (PSP) capacity in the country, and working to increase it to 50 GW in the years to come, he said.

"But what is more important is raising the figure from 5 gigawatt...to around 50 GW or more of hydro PSP in the next 5 or 6 years...and we are working on it," Prasad said.
