The Maharashtra government is exploring the development of two new deep water greenfield ports in the Konkan region, near the coastal towns of Vijaydurg and Ganeshgule in the Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts, respectively.
These ports are intended to facilitate economic growth and development in these regions by providing logistics facilities and freight rail connectivity. The new ports will feature modern cargo handling facilities, including container terminals, warehouses, and other necessary infrastructure.
To determine the feasibility of the project, the government is appointing consultants to conduct studies on technical feasibility, financial viability, project implementation models, revenue models, and financial appraisal.
The studies will also assess which types of cargo or goods can be exported and imported from each port, their annual volumes, any potential threats to the projects, and mitigation measures.
Additionally, the studies will recommend road and rail connectivity to facilitate trade flow.
Currently, Maharashtra's coastline spans 720km and features two major ports - Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port - as well as 48 minor ports such as Dighi, Dabhol, Tarapur, Dahanu, Belapur, Trombay, Kelshi, Bankot, Revdanda, Ratnagiri, Jaigad, and others. The development of these new ports will further bolster the state's economy and improve its trade.
