BPCL Plans to Increase Kochi Refinery Capacity to 17 MTPA

Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) plans to increase the refining capacity of its Kochi Refinery in Kerala from 15.5 million metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 17 MTPA.

The proposed expansion is aimed at improving operational flexibility and enabling BPCL to respond to rising energy demand. It will also support closer integration between the company’s refining and petrochemical operations.

BPCL Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Khanna said the capacity increase, along with the ongoing polypropylene project at Kochi, will help the company expand its portfolio of higher-value products.

The proposed increase comes as BPCL’s refining operations recorded higher throughput. Its refineries processed a record 41.2 million tonnes of crude during FY 2025-26, reflecting continued demand for refining capacity.

BPCL is also progressing with an integrated refinery expansion and petrochemical project at its Bina Refinery in Madhya Pradesh.

The Bina project is expected to be supported by downstream petrochemical units, with the planned facilities aimed at creating an integrated energy and petrochemical complex in Central India. The development is part of BPCL’s broader strategy to increase petrochemical integration alongside its refining operations.
