Transocean Secures Contract from ONGC for its Ultra-Deepwater Drillship

Offshore driller Transocean has secured a contract for its ultra-deepwater drillship, Dhirubhai Deepwater KG2, for work offshore India.

The contract was awarded by India’s state?controlled Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). This is the second ultra-deepwater drillship the company has hired. The unit will mobilize in the next three to four months. The deal’s financial details were not disclosed.

“The first rig is already deployed in the Mahanadi Basin and is drilling a deepwater well. The development marks another important step in accelerating deepwater and ultra-deepwater exploration, unlocking India’s offshore hydrocarbon potential and reinforcing national energy security,” ONGC said on social media.

The Dhirubhai Deepwater KG2 has been idle since May this year, when it ended a long-term deal with Petrobras in Brazil.

The first drillship ONGC hired this year is Vantage Drilling’s 2010-built rig Platinum Explorer. The deal for a three-year firm period, awarded in February, is estimated at $261mn.
