Fisia Italimpianti Achieves First Water Milestone at Zuluf Groundwater Treatment Plant

Fisia Italimpianti, the water treatment subsidiary of the Webuild Group, has achieved the “First Water” milestone at the Zuluf Groundwater Treatment Plant, marking the successful completion of construction and the transition to the operational phase of the facility developed for Saudi Aramco.

The project forms a key component of the Zuluf Offshore Oilfield Development in eastern Saudi Arabia, where the new treatment plant will support enhanced oil recovery operations by supplying treated water for reinjection into offshore reservoirs.

The achievement signifies that the facility’s pressurized systems have been successfully commissioned and are operating in accordance with design parameters, paving the way for commercial operations expected to commence in the coming months.

Under the project, Fisia Italimpianti was responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and long-term operation and maintenance of the groundwater treatment facility. The company will continue to operate and maintain the plant under a 25-year operations and maintenance agreement.

Designed to overcome the challenges of treating highly saline groundwater containing elevated levels of minerals, dissolved gases, and hydrocarbons, the facility utilizes advanced treatment technologies to produce high-quality water suitable for reinjection into offshore oil wells. The reinjection process is critical for maintaining reservoir pressure and sustaining crude oil production from the Zuluf offshore field in the Arabian Gulf.

Upon full commissioning, the groundwater treatment plant will have the capacity to process up to 185,000 cubic metres of water per day, making it one of the largest specialized groundwater treatment facilities supporting upstream oil and gas operations in the region.

The project incorporates advanced purification systems, gas management technologies, and waste minimization processes to maximize operational efficiency while supporting Saudi Aramco’s long-term production objectives.

The successful delivery of the milestone also marks Webuild Group’s entry into the high-value oil and gas infrastructure sector, while reinforcing Fisia Italimpianti’s expertise in delivering large-scale water treatment and desalination solutions for strategic energy projects worldwide.
