Defence Ministry Approves 250 MW Solar-BESS Project in Sitapur, UP

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the development of a 250 MW solar power project integrated with a battery energy storage system (BESS) on vacant defence land in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh.

The project marks the first large-scale renewable energy initiative of its kind to be implemented on defence-owned land, highlighting the government’s push toward clean energy adoption and optimal utilization of unused assets.

Spread across nearly 850 acres of ex-Cantonment land, the project will be developed by state-owned NTPC through a competitive bidding process to ensure cost efficiency and long-term energy savings. The implementation will be carried out in coordination with the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army) and the Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE). The initiative is expected to significantly enhance energy security for defence establishments in Uttar Pradesh, while reducing dependence on conventional grid electricity.

The Ministry of Defence has described the project as a convergence of energy security, sustainability, technological innovation and national security objectives. Once completed, it is expected to serve as a benchmark for future solar-plus-storage projects on defence land across India, reinforcing the country’s transition toward renewable energy infrastructure.
