India Assesses 102 GW Floating Solar PV Potential – MNRE

India’s floating solar photovoltaic potential has been assessed at 102.18 GWp, significantly strengthening the country’s overall renewable energy outlook, according to a report released by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi.

The assessment, prepared by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, adds floating solar capacity to earlier estimates of ground-mounted solar potential, taking India’s total solar potential to 3,445 GWp. The findings highlight the growing importance of reservoirs and water bodies as strategic assets for clean energy generation, particularly in land-constrained regions.

The Ministry is currently working on a dedicated support scheme to accelerate the deployment of floating solar projects across the country, alongside parallel initiatives for agri-photovoltaics. MNRE Secretary Santosh Kumar Sarangi confirmed that consultations are underway with the Ministry of Finance to finalize policy and funding mechanisms for these emerging technologies.

The assessment used geospatial mapping and scientific analysis to identify suitable water bodies based on solar radiation availability, water depth, year-round stability, and proximity to transmission infrastructure, reinforcing India’s push toward diversified and sustainable renewable energy expansion.
