Western Coalfields Signs R&D Deal for Pumped Storage Hydropower Project

Western Coalfields (WCL) signed a research & development (R&D) agreement for a pumped storage hydropower project.

The agreement was executed in the presence of Director (Technical) (Planning & Projects), WCL, S S Paranjpe. The proposed project at Shivpuri Open Cast Mine in the Pench Area will transform an abandoned mine sump into a lower reservoir and a mine dump into an upper reservoir, creating an innovative pumped storage hydropower system.

The initiative aims to generate renewable energy while offering grid balancing support during periods of high electricity demand through energy storage capabilities. It aligns with India’s sustainability objectives by promoting renewable energy adoption, responsible mine closure practices and environmental restoration.

The initiative could serve as a model for sustainable mine reclamation and green energy integration across the coal sector.
