NTPC Explores Development of Two 700 MW Nuclear Units in Bihar

NTPC is set to explore the development of two 700 MW nuclear power units in Banka district, Bihar, with an estimated investment of Rs 25,000 crore.

A feasibility study is currently underway to assess the project’s viability, with support from the Bihar government, including assurances on water availability and land requirements of around 1,000 acres.

The project forms part of NTPC’s broader strategy to diversify its energy portfolio and expand into nuclear power. Following the feasibility study, a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared. Industry estimates suggest nuclear plants typically require significant capital and long development timelines.

NTPC aims to build around 30 GW of nuclear capacity in the long term, aligning with India’s target of achieving 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047. The company is also targeting at least 2 GW of operational nuclear capacity by 2032 and is already working with Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited on a separate nuclear project in Rajasthan.
