NHPC Achieves Major Milestone at its Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project

NHPC has achieved a major construction milestone at its 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project with the successful lowering of a 395 tonne generator stator for Unit 6.

This critical installation marks significant progress in the electro-mechanical works of one of India’s largest hydropower projects and represents a key step toward the assembly and commissioning of the unit. The complex operation was carried out on April 23, 2026, through precise planning and coordination among engineering teams and stakeholders, highlighting strong execution capabilities at the site.

The Subansiri Lower project comprises eight generating units of 250 MW each, with a total planned capacity of 2,000 MW. With the successful completion of this stage, the project is advancing closer to commissioning 1,500 MW capacity across six units, indicating steady progress toward partial operationalization.

NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Bhupender Gupta congratulated the project team led by Executive Director Rajendra Prasad and executing agency GE Vernova for their engineering excellence and coordination in completing this complex task. The project is considered strategically important for strengthening India’s renewable energy capacity and improving long-term grid stability through large-scale hydropower generation.
