SJVN Plans to Expand its Buxar Coal Power Project in Bihar

Indian hydropower producer SJVN plans to expand its Buxar coal power project in Bihar by adding 800 MW to the existing 1,320 MW under construction. The expansion is aimed at addressing India's surging power demand, which is projected to reach 384 GW by 2032.

The Ministry of Power plans to add over 80 GW of coal-based capacity while accelerating renewable energy development. SJVN, one of the two hydropower firms diversifying into coal, is contributing to this effort to ensure baseload capacity. The company aims to commission the first 660-MW unit at Buxar by May, with the second unit operational by year-end.

Discussions are ongoing regarding investment plans and a power sale agreement with Bihar. The move aligns with the government’s push for profit-making state power companies to go public.
