India: Centre to Build 30 GW Renewable Energy Plants along Western Border

The Central government is mulling over building 30 GW renewable energy capacity along a desert on its western border. The projects, which will be spread across the states of Gujarat and Rajasthan, are part of efforts to expand India’s renewable energy capacity and reduce the share of fossil fuels in its energy mix.

The Centre is also planning to install 25 GW solar projects, combined with storage capacity, in the high-altitude region of Ladakh.

The Centre had recently announced a target to set up 450 GW renewable power generation capacity by 2030, while it works on a nearer-term goal of 175 GW by 2022.
