India: Etalin Hydro Power Project to be Delayed

The Etalin hydroelectric power project of 3,097 MW in the state of Arunachal Pradesh will be delayed due to the impact on biodiversity.

The project was recently discussed during a meeting of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) expert forest panel, the Forest Advisory Committee (FAC).

The panel noted the proposed project location falls at the junction of the Palaearctic, Indo-Chinese, and Indo-Malayan bio-geographic regions having luxuriant forests and plethora of flora and fauna.

Around six globally threatened mammal species are found in this region of which three are endangered and three are under vulnerable category.

The project site is home to about 680 bird species, which is around half the bird species of India and among them, 19 are globally threatened and 10 near threatened. The area is also home to tigers and other wild animals.

The entire region falls under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) management categories III and IV, Endemic Bird Area, Global Biodiversity Hotspot, and Key Biodiversity Area indicating its importance at global scale.
