India, Bangladesh Sign MoU to Use Mongla Port for Transportation to Tripura

India and Bangladesh have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for allowing the use of Mongla port in Bangladesh to transport 20 LPG bullet trucks to Tripura. In order to meet the growing demand for petroleum in Tripura, the use of Mongla port has been facilitated and the State Government is also taking all steps to ensure that there is no shortage of fuel.

As per reports, the State Government is working for increasing the volume of petrol and diesel storage capacity from 400 kilolitres to 2050 kilolitres at Dharamnagar and gas cylinder production is also planned to be increased. Moreover, over 150 petrol pumps ten LPG outlets are also being planned to be set in various parts of Tripura.

In October 2018, India and Bangladesh had signed three agreements, including one to use Chittagong and Mongla Ports in Bangladesh for goods movement and for enhancing inland and coastal waterways connectivity between the two countries.

Tripura Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki had earlier said that the construction of ‘Maitri Setu’ (friendship bridge) over the Feni river in southern Tripura and its connectivity with Chittagong and Mongla ports would make Tripura a logistic hub.

He had also said that the Centre has taken a historic decision to ensure waterways connectivity with Bangladesh which, in the long run, would boost trade and commerce and also attract industries in Tripura and create it a viable and competitive zone.
