Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (Adwea) has qualified global safety science leader UL as a certified third-party body for the certification of products listed under Category 0901020, relating to power distribution and electrical equipment.
Awarded a five-year qualification, UL has been added to Adwea’s approved vendor list after successfully completing the utility firm's stringent qualification process.
This qualifies UL to certify switchgear and control gear equipment, transformers, cables and batteries for manufacturers selling products to end-users within the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa) group of companies, which includes Abu Dhabi Distribution Company, Emirates Water and Electrical Company, Abu Dhabi Transmission & Despatch Company (Transco) and Al Ain Distribution Company.
According to Adwea, this qualification expands UL’s capabilities in the emirates.
Last year, UL’s Abu Dhabi laboratory was approved by Abu Dhabi Power Corporation to test low voltage switchgear and control gear equipment. Through its subsidiaries, Taqa provides transmission and distribution networks and grids that serve more than one million customers.
As per the deal, UL will certify equipment that supports existing critical infrastructure in the emirate and enables the increased integration of renewable energy.
By helping manufacturers seeking to supply equipment capable of distributing renewable energy to existing power grids, UL will contribute to Abu Dhabi’s ambitious target of generating 50 per cent of its power requirements from clean energy sources by 2030.
Hamid Syed, the vice president and general manager in the Middle East and Africa for UL, said: "We are very proud of this achievement. Being qualified by Adwea will enable us to help manufacturers who want to supply equipment to Abu Dhabi Distribution Company and other companies within the Taqa group."
"Being a certified third-party body gives UL the mandate to witness and approve compliant results from any accredited third-party laboratory," he added.
