Adnoc Makes New Onshore Oil Discoveries

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) has made three oil discoveries that are expected to add over 650 million barrels of oil to the UAE’s hydrocarbon reserves.

The firm said it has identified 500 million barrels of oil at Bu Hasa, which is said to be Abu Dhabi’s biggest onshore field with a production capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) of crude oil.

Adnoc said in a statement: “The 500 million barrels of oil discovered from an exploration well in the Bu Hasa field has unlocked a new formation within the field, offering substantial additional premium-grade Murban oil resources.”

Bu Hasa forms part of the Adnoc Onshore Concession, which is operated by Adnoc Onshore.

The second oil discovery, which is estimated to hold approximately 100 million barrels of oil in place, was made in the Occidental-operated onshore block 3.

Exploration rights for the onshore block 3 were awarded to Occidental in early 2019.

UAE’s state-owned oil company also identified nearly 50 million barrels of light and sweet Murban-quality crude oil in the Al Dhafra Petroleum Concession.

The Al Dhafra Petroleum Concession is operated by Al Dhafra Petroleum, a joint venture (JV) between Adnoc, GS Energy, and the Korea National Oil Company (KNOC).

The latest onshore oil discoveries were disclosed at the Adnoc board of directors meeting, which was chaired by Abu Dhabi Executive Council member and Abu Dhabi Executive Office chairman Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

In December 2021, ADNOC made a “significant” discovery of conventional oil, condensate, and gas equivalent to one billion barrels of oil in an exploration well in the onshore block 4 concession.

The block 4 concession, which is located Abu Dhabi, is operated by Japan’s INPEX/JODCO.
