Meja Urja Nigam (MUNPL), a joint venture (JV) between NTPC and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (UPRVUNL), is planning to enter into floating solar space. The company also plans to augment its thermal power generation capacity from 1.32 GW to 5.6 GW.
The Uttar Pradesh-based company seeks to explore the possibility of setting up a floating solar project at the Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar reservoir. The reservoir is huge, and the firm will be working with the Government of Uttar Pradesh as it is in their purview.
For its thermal portfolio, among the proposed 5.6 GW of capacity, the state cabinet has granted its approval to build two 800 MW units, which would require investments of around Rs 18,000 crore. By 2032, NTPC targets to reach 60,000 MW (60 GW) of renewable energy capacity. In 2022, it commissioned a 100 MW Ramagundam floating solar power project, the largest floating solar project in the country.
The JV is committed to diversifying operations to align with its evolving energy transition objectives and increasing power demand. As part of its efforts to diversify operations, the power generation company is also exploring technologies to utilize fly ash.
The company is developing a technology to construct cement concrete roads, ash mixed with slack, which is a waste material from steel industries. In addition, MUNPL seeks to establish a silos to collect ash at all its plants due to its growing demand.
