JSW Steel to Source Hydrogen-Based Power from its Vijayanagar Plant

JSW Steel intends to utilize green power from the 3,800-tonne hydrogen plant being set up at its Vijayanagar plant, which will enable it to supply green steel in 18-24 months. To this end, the steel major has signed a contract with the Group company JSW Energy to source green hydrogen and green oxygen.

The company will have nearly 25 MW of round-the-clock (RTC) renewable power, making it well-positioned to cater to the demand in the global and domestic market. Besides, it will receive carbon credits based on the quantum of thermal power being replaced with green energy.

Leading in its capability to embrace large-scale renewable energy deployment, the company has already secured contracts for one GW of capacity and operationalized 225 MW solar capacity at the Vijayanagar plant in April, 2022.

JSW Steel has domestic capacity of 27.7 MT, and is likely to will reach 37 MT by FY25. Eventually, the company aspires to power its entire setup through 10 GW of renewable capacity.
