Egypt Completes Work On Electricity Interconnection with Saudi Arabia

Egypt has announced the completion of works on its side of the electrical interconnection project with Saudi Arabia, according to its Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Ismat.

"Work is underway on the Egypt-Saudi interconnection to exchange 3,000 megawatts (MW) via a route that extends for 1,320 kilometres," said the minister.

The project has been fully completed on the Egyptian side, with only a small part of the work and technical tests remaining on the Saudi side, he said.

In February, Esmat had announced that the Egypt-Saudi electricity interconnection project had entered its final testing stage.

The project connects three major high-voltage converter stations – two in Saudi Arabia and one in Badr City, east of Cairo, via overhead transmission lines and submarine cables across the Red Sea.

The interconnection project is expected to strengthen grid stability, improve service quality, increase reliance on renewable energy sources, and reduce fuel consumption through more efficient generation and load management.
