DEWA’s 250-MW Pumped-Storage Plant Starts Trial Operation

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has started trial operation and electricity export from a 250-MW pumped-storage hydroelectric power project in Hatta, which is in the final stages before full commissioning.

The AED-1.42-billion (USD 386m/EUR 333m) facility produces electricity using water stored in the Hatta Dam. It has a storage capacity of 1,500 MWh and a life span of 80 years. The station is equipped with two main water valves, each weighing about 110 tonnes.

During off-peak hours, clean energy from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will be used to pump water back to the project’s upper dam.

Once fully operational, the plant will be able to meet all of Hatta’s electricity demand, estimated at 39 MW, with the surplus exported to Dubai. The project supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net-Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050.

The update on the project came during a site visit by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and CEO of DEWA.
