Chhattisgarh Govt Inks Pact with NHPC for 1,800 MW Pumped Storage Projects

The Chhattisgarh government has signed an agreement with the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) and Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company (CSPGCL) to develop two pumped storage projects (PSPs) with a combined capacity of 1,800 MW.

Inked on August 8, the pact covers the 800 MW Hasdeo Bango project in Korba district, involving an investment of around Rs 3,417 crore, and the 1,000 MW Kurund PSP, with an estimated investment of Rs 6,000 crore. Officials noted these projects will enhance renewable energy storage capacity, aid in grid stability, and support peak power demand.

Pumped storage projects work by storing water in an upper reservoir during low demand and releasing it to generate power during peak demand, making them critical for integrating renewable sources like solar and wind.

The collaboration between NHPC, CSPGCL, and the state government marks a significant push towards Chhattisgarh’s clean energy transition and large-scale hydropower infrastructure development.
