ACME Commits $4.2bn for Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Project in Oman

Hydrogen Oman (Hydrom) has announced a major milestone in the Sultanate’s green hydrogen sector, with India-based ACME Group committing approximately US$4.2 billion for the development of Phase 2 and Phase 3 of its green hydrogen and green ammonia project in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD). The investment reinforces Oman’s position as a leading global hub for green hydrogen production and supports the country’s economic diversification objectives.

The investment follows the signing of Project Development and Usufruct Agreements between Hydrom, the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ), and ACME Group, formally integrating the project into Oman’s national hydrogen development framework.

Under the scope of work, ACME will develop the second and third phases of its green hydrogen and green ammonia complex across a combined area of approximately 80 square kilometers in Duqm. Each phase is expected to produce around 71,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 400,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, significantly expanding the project’s overall production capacity.

The expansion builds on the project’s first phase, which is already under construction and designed to produce 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year. Upon completion of all phases, the facility is expected to achieve a total production capacity of approximately 0.9 million tonnes of green ammonia annually, positioning it among the region’s largest green ammonia developments.

Hydrom stated that the ACME investment demonstrates the growing momentum of Oman’s green hydrogen industry and its ability to attract large-scale international investments. The project is expected to contribute to the development of downstream industrial activities, strengthen the country’s renewable energy value chain, and create new opportunities for local economic growth and job creation.

With ACME’s latest commitment, Oman continues to accelerate the development of its national hydrogen portfolio. Hydrom’s awarded green hydrogen projects across Al Wusta and Dhofar Governorates now represent more than US$50 billion in planned investments, supported by nearly 35 GW of renewable energy capacity and targeting approximately 1.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen production annually by 2030.

Hydrom emphasized that as investment activity continues to accelerate in Duqm, green hydrogen is evolving beyond an energy opportunity into a catalyst for industrial development, investment attraction, and economic diversification. Through its structured project portfolio and enabling regulatory framework, Oman is steadily advancing its ambition to become a leading global producer and exporter of green hydrogen and its derivatives.
