MERC Prioritizes Ambernath Substation for Mumbai’s Data Centre Ecosystem

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has directed that the proposed 400/220 kV GIS substation at Ambernath be executed on a priority basis.

This critical transmission project is designed to bolster power supply for the state's rapidly expanding data centre ecosystem, particularly along the high-demand Mumbai–Navi Mumbai–Thane corridor. The commission noted that the Ambernath facility will be dedicated exclusively to meeting the intensive electricity requirements of consumers within the Green Integrated Data Centre Park at Palava, aligning with the state government's strategic digital infrastructure policies. To accelerate implementation, MERC approved a Demand Development Fund framework route. Under this arrangement, Lodha Developers will construct the project using its own capital under the supervision of the state transmission utility, MSETCL.

Once completed, the asset will be handed over to MSETCL for operations and maintenance free of cost, ensuring readiness for projected loads by 2028.
