KBL Achieves Major Nuclear Milestone as Kalpakkam FBR Attains Criticality

India has reached a historic milestone in its nuclear energy journey as the Kalpakkam Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) successfully attained criticality, a crucial step in the nation’s three-stage nuclear power program.

A key contributor to this success is Kirloskar Brothers (KBL), which engineered and supplied the primary and secondary heat transport pumps, the only rotating equipment in the reactor. Each pump, weighing around 135 tonne and built with exotic materials, handles liquid sodium at temperatures exceeding 500°C, demonstrating extraordinary precision and durability. KBL is among just four companies globally capable of producing such nuclear-grade pumps. Additionally, KBL provided concrete volute circulating water pumps, uniquely designed for seawater flow and integrated with advanced intake systems, along with a comprehensive firefighting system.

Together, these innovations will enhance operational efficiency, safety, and resilience, marking a landmark achievement in India’s nuclear energy program under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
