India Moves Ahead with Largest Hydropower Dam in Arunachal Pradesh

India is moving forward with plans to construct its largest hydropower dam in Arunachal Pradesh, as a strategic response to China's dam construction across the border.

This Rs 1.5-lakh crore project, which will feature a storage capacity of 9.2 billion cubic mtrs., aims to mitigate potential threats related to water security in the event of a conflict. The dam will be located on the Siang River, which is known as the Brahmaputra downstream in India and the Yarlung Zangbo in China.

The proposed site for this project is Parong, a remote village in Siang district. Drilling machines are set to arrive next month to conduct pre-feasibility studies.

While there were discussions about alternative locations like Dite Dime and Ugeng further upstream, Parong has been confirmed as the primary site for the dam. Pre-feasibility studies are expected to take about a month, as per the local government officials.
