Cabinet Committee Approves 2 Hydropower Projects in Arunachal Pradesh

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved an investment of Rs 3,689 crore for two hydropower projects in Arunachal Pradesh aimed at enhancing the region’s power supply and supporting the national grid. The two projects, the 186 MW Tato-I Hydro Electric Project and the 240 MW Heo Hydro Electric Project, will be developed through joint ventures between the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) and the government of Arunachal Pradesh.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Rs 1,750 crore will be allocated for the Tato-I project and Rs 1,939 crore for the Heo project, both of which will improve the power infrastructure in the region. The Tato-I project will receive Rs 77.37 crore from the central government to build roads, bridges, and transmission lines, alongside Rs 120.43 crore in central financial assistance for the state’s equity share.

Similarly, the Heo project will get Rs 127.28 crore for infrastructure and Rs 130.43 crore in financial assistance for equity. The projects will also lead to substantial infrastructure improvements in the region, including the construction of hospitals, schools, vocational training institutes, markets, and playgrounds, financed by a dedicated fund of Rs 15 crore.

The initiatives are expected to foster socio-economic development in Arunachal Pradesh by enhancing local infrastructure and creating opportunities for skill development, thus contributing to the overall growth of the district. Additionally, the new hydropower plants will boost the region's energy capacity and assist in stabilizing the national electricity grid.
